Easy ways to save on cooling costs

Information from the U.S. Energy department states that from air conditioning monitoring in households it was found that in the US we are spending 6% of its annual energy use on our inside cooling. It is costing homeowners $11B each year to power their coolers. People go without their coolers to avoid high bills but there are ways to save on your cooling costs:

Use fans instead of the AC
It is best to be using fans whenever you can instead of turning on your ac. There are portable floor fans that work quite well and because it blows directly on you, you will feel around 4 degrees cooler.
It can help to place a bowl of ice in front of the fan, it will blow the cooler air as the ice slowly melts. Ceiling fans are quite economical if you have them running in the right direction. Make sure the knob is switched over for the summer.

Keep you cooler clean
There is no point doing air conditioning monitoring to find how where you can be saving on cooler costs if you are running an ineffective cooler. This will simply waste money and energy. Be sure to check the air filter is clean or replace if necessary. Just by doing this you can save between 5% and 15% on your bill. Filters should be replaced every three months, but this will depend on how often you use your cooler. Get a regular service as well just to ensure everything is running as it should be.

Bring on the fresh air
When the air is cooler at night time try opening some windows and let some of the cooler air circulate through the house.Once early morning comes shut all windows, blinds and door to trap in the cooler air. This will help to keep the cooler off for longer.

Check for leaks
Check for leaks around window trims and door frames. If you have gaps and leaks you are allowing your air cooler air to escape hence using the air conditioner is pretty much useless.

Dehumidify
If the humidity is high but the temperature is not high then using a dehumidifier is a good way to help you to feel comfortable. On these types of days using a temperature and dehumidifier together works well.

Control your cooler
Lower the thermostat on the air conditioner to 78 degrees when you are sitting inside then you can raise it at night when you are sleeping or if you are heading out.
If this can get a little confusing you can always go for a programmable one that will do it all for you.
There are several types available so be sure to read up and see what type will sit you better.

By doing some basic AC monitoring and taking a few of these hints into consideration you are well on your way to lowering your energy use and the high electricity bills.
